The Financial Times reported that DeepSeek’s computational advantage stemmed from a series of published papers by the AI startup demonstrating that powerful large language models could be built using significantly fewer Nvidia chips than American rivals required.

According to a new report from Promptfoo, a vulnerability-discovery firm backed by Andreessen Horowitz, one version of DeepSeek refused to answer nearly 85 percent of 1,360 questions related to sensitive topics in China. Consequently, global investors erased almost $600 billion from Nvidia’s market value, questioning whether spending hundreds of billions on massive AI compute clusters is truly necessary.

These concerns were absent in Mililing, a tiny village in southern Guangdong province where Liang grew up and returned for the Lunar New Year celebration. He arrived accompanied by security guards. The village is so small that virtually nothing about it appears in English on the internet. Liang received an enthusiastic welcome; a banner on a red ceremonial arch read: “Liang Wenfeng returns to his hometown to share good results and energize rural revitalization.”

His family home has become an unexpected pilgrimage site for admirers. Yet neighbors, while proud of his achievements, know little about the daily life of this enigmatic figure who has shaken Silicon Valley. DeepSeek and Liang declined interview requests.

Locals say he comes from a family of teachers; his father, mother, and grandfather were all educators. A neighbor sharing the Liang surname but no blood relation said: “His parents are good people. He left the village young for his studies.” He added that Mililing is “a village of a thousand Liangs.”

At the nearby middle school, a former teacher recalled Liang in a class of 50 as a “well-mannered and solid” student. “He was an outstanding student, especially in mathematics. He also loved reading comic books,” the teacher added.

Liang left high school in 2002 for Zhejiang University, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in computer science and writing a thesis on motion-detection algorithms. After graduating in 2010, he applied his computational skills to algorithmic stock trading, first as a freelancer and then by founding the hedge fund High-Flyer in 2015.

High-Flyer has become one of China’s top four quantitative hedge funds, using algorithms for arbitrage trading. After building wealth in finance, Liang pivoted toward generative AI, launching DeepSeek in 2023 by leveraging High-Flyer’s talent and computing resources.

A rival fund manager who has known Liang for years said: “He is unique among us because he is a real engineer. He thinks and acts like an engineer. While we manage people and capital, he writes code every day.”

Liang’s stated goal for DeepSeek is achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), the same objective pursued by OpenAI, where machines would attain human-level critical thinking. The fund manager believes Liang will ultimately “eliminate the human factor entirely” to reach AGI.

Liang’s quantitative colleagues celebrate his success. One trader said: “I hope this victory makes Beijing treat us more kindly.” While Western quants are hailed as digital-age financial wizards, their Chinese counterparts have faced repeated criticism. During market downturns, regulators restricted their activities, accusing them of profiting from 200 million retail investors’ losses.

The broader financial sector has also endured difficult years as authorities imposed salary caps on state-owned funds and criticized the industry for insufficient social contribution.

However, Beijing maintains a more positive stance toward AI firms and has acknowledged Liang’s role at DeepSeek. Before the holidays, he was selected as the sole AI leader to join a public symposium with Li Qiang, China’s second-ranking leader, where entrepreneurs were urged to drive technological breakthroughs for the nation.

Publicly, Liang has remained silent even as he becomes a focal point in US-China tensions. Some American lawmakers have reacted to DeepSeek’s advances by calling for tighter restrictions on China’s access to Nvidia chips.

This silence aligns with Liang’s character. A fund manager who knows him well said: “For those who know him well, he talks a lot when the topic interests him. You have to get used to his communication style. When he suddenly goes quiet, which happens often, he isn’t being rude; he is thinking.” He added: “If he doesn’t want to talk to you, he will make that clear.”

DeepSeek has not responded to attacks from US rivals, ranging from accusations of technology theft to claims it serves as a tool of the Chinese state. The internet scours for clues about Liang, dissecting the scant public information available.

But for Mililing residents, he represents something far simpler and more innocent: a hardworking student from a small farming community who achieved a monumental victory.

Leon Liang, who played football with Liang Wenfeng as a child, said: “We all grew up in this village. We are very proud of him.”
